Frequntly Asked Questions

What does SAGE stand for?

SAGE stands for “Sexual and Gender Equality.”  The full name of the group is “The Portland State University Sexual and Gender Equality Task Force.”

Why is it no longer the Sexual Diversity Task Force?

The name of the task force was changed to SAGE so that both sexual orientation and gender identity were more clearly named as part of our mission.

What does SAGE do?

SAGE’s mission is to create a campus climate that values and promotes diversity at Portland State University.  They evaluate and advocate for GLBTQ inclusive policies targeting health care, harassment, benefits, and other quality of life measures, as well as providing trainings around GLBTQ issues for other offices on campus.  SAGE is also a place for people who are advocating for GLBTQ students, staff and faculty to get together and network.

How did SAGE get started?

A formal presidential taskforce charged with the task of looking at campus issues and awareness related to sexual orientation was created in 1998 four years after a campus climate survey exposed the negative experiences GLBTQ students, staff, and faculty were having on campus.

Who serves on SAGE?

SAGE is comprised of students, staff, and faculty of Portland State University.  It contains representatives from Human Resources, Women’s Studies, Student Health & Counseling, Student Activities, the Women’s Resource Center, the Queer Resource Center, University Studies, Residence Life, and more.

What are gender neutral bathrooms and why are they important?

Single stall bathrooms and bathrooms not restricted specifically to male or female are considered gender neutral bathrooms.  Individuals who are read as gender non-conforming (either through identity or presentation) frequently encounter hostility in restrooms, often because they are seen as being in the “wrong one.”  Gender neutral bathrooms provide a safe space for individuals answer the call of nature without the fear of being out or having security called on them. A map of these restrooms is available here.
